September 8, 1600 — Yamagata, Dewa Province
The Keichō Dewa Campaign, known as the “Sekigahara of the North,” began.
An army of approximately 20,000 troops from the western-aligned Uesugi clan invaded the eastern-aligned Mogami domain. The Mogami forces numbered only about 7,000.
Mogami Yoshiaki personally led his troops and defended Yamagata Castle. He deployed forces throughout the region, while at Hasedō Castle on the front line, his men mounted a fierce defense under siege.
Despite the overwhelming disparity in numbers, Yoshiaki refused to retreat.
Then, news arrived from Sekigahara—and the course of the battle changed completely.
