1561年（永禄4年）9月10日、信濃国川中島。武田軍の啄木鳥戦法を看破した上杉謙信は、車懸かりの陣で八幡原の武田信玄の本陣へ猛攻。
謙信は馬上から太刀を振るい信玄へ斬りかかり、信玄は軍配で受け止めた――。戦国屈指の両雄が直接刃を交えたと伝わる。

Having seen through the Takeda army’s “Woodpecker” tactic, Uesugi Kenshin launched a fierce assault on Takeda Shingen’s headquarters at Hachimanbara, employing the Kuruma-gakari formation.
It is said that Kenshin rode on horseback and struck at Shingen with his sword, while Shingen blocked the blow with his war fan—a legendary direct clash between two of the greatest warlords of the Sengoku period.
